We love Pinterest, and are inspired daily by the beautiful images posted from all over the world. I've pinned over 16,000 images and spend a lot of time in the evenings uploading and re-pinning images to carefully crafted and organized boards related to gardening, cooking, travel, books, lifestyle and decor ideas for every room in the home. If you haven't seen our page, click here to join over 19,000 people that currently follow our boards.
When we begin a new design project with a client we always ask them to provide pictures of things they like that can help us capture their vision. Many clients create their own Pinterest boards to collect inspiration. We often create a "secret board" where we collect inspiration for our clients project that is not visible to the public. We can upload our sketches or quick pictures we snap to this board as well. Clients can also pin to this board making it very easy to share information. This can be extremely helpful.
An important thing to remember is that inspiration and copying are two different things. Using examples of published work stimulates new ideas and helps us to better articulate our vision. So much information is so readily available to everyone now that clients sometimes become frustrated when they can't find the exact image they want to duplicate in their own home...but that is not the point. Collecting details from different images that can be incorporated into your space becoming uniquely yours is what makes "Inspiration" come to life.
A certain paint finish may be the only detail you love in the room, and will be invaluable inspiration as your project progresses.
Another danger is getting caught up in too many different styles. We always recommend saving a lot of different images for either the space or entire home that you are designing. Then go back through the images and determine what you really like...ask yourself if it will work for you? Eliminate those ideas that don't work. A very important last test is answering the question... Does the inspiration you have collected reflect a similar style that flows easily from room to room and both inside and out. Toss the images that just don't work with everything else regardless of how much you like them.
Your research and carefully selected images will help both you and your designer (if you choose to hire one) make wise decisions as you progress with the details of your project. You can readily determine from your collected inspiration if you prefer paint or stain, wood or tile for the floors, type of windows, hardware and plumbing finishes...and the list of decisions to be made just goes on and on.
